Lewis Delivers Double Walk-Off as Hatters Sweep Holy Cross

DeLand, Fla. -- If recent results are any indication, the Stetson Hatters just might have something special brewing this season.  Freshman Devin Lewis certainly had an unforgettable day at the plate on Wednesday.

Lewis hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, then repeated the feat in Game 2 as Stetson swept a doubleheader from Holy Cross, 4-3 and 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters have now won seven in a row and 12 out of their last 13 games, with three of the last four victories coming in walk-off fashion.

"We are young, we make some mistakes that we shouldn't, but we are getting better every day," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "That is all you can ask for.  The chemistry is real good, and I am having a lot of fun with them."

Game 2's heroics came after Stetson rallied to the tie the score 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on Molly McLaughlin's two-out, two-run single.

The score remained knotted in the seventh when Ashly Smith doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch.  That set the stage for Lewis, who battled through a 12-pitch at-bat, fouling off six pitches with two strikes, before delivering her second game-winning hit on the day - a single to right field.

"I was just trying to see the ball and hit it," Lewis said.  "It felt good just being able to help our team win.  Being a freshman, it is a little nerve racking in those situations, but I am happy I came through."

It was Stetson's fourth double walk-off win in Patricia Wilson Field history, and the first time the same player accounted for both walk-off hits.

"Devin exhibited just the right attitude," Griffin said.  "She went up there to hit the ball with runners in scoring position both times.  You don't go up there to watch, you go up there to hit, and she got the job done.  It was a great day."

In Game 1, the score was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Maggie Fritts led off with a walk and moved to second on McLaughlin's sacrifice.  Lewis then singled up the middle to score Fritts with the winning run.

Lizzie Shubert hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth to give Stetson a 3-1 lead.  Holy Cross (2-7) scored two in the sixth to tie the game.

Jaime Tino allowed three runs over six innings before giving way to Tori Perkins in the seventh.  Perkins (7-5) earned the win in relief in Game 1, then went the distance for the victory in Game 2.  She had six strikeouts on the day.

The Hatters will look to extend their win streak this weekend as they host the Stetson Invitational this weekend Patricia Wilson Field.
