McLaughlin, Perkins Lead Hatters Past FIU

DeLand, Fla. -- Molly McLaughlin may wear number 8, but apparently "3" was her lucky number of the night.

McLaughlin went 3-for-3 with her third home run of the year and three RBI as Stetson defeated FIU 3-0 Wednesday night at Patricia Wilson Field.

Tori Perkins fired a two-hit shutout in the circle and the Hatters played errorless defense to improve to 23-17 on the season.

"Molly swung the bat well and her home run came at a perfect time," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "I thought Tori did a great job on the mound, the defense played well, and we scored enough to win.  It was a good game."

McLaughlin put the Hatters on top 1-0 with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the third inning that scored Linda Ross.

The Hatter sophomore came through again in the fifth, driving a 2-2 pitch into the left field bleachers with Kasey Fava aboard.

The three runs was more than enough support for Perkins (14-9), who breezed her way to her fourth shutout of the year.  She allowed just a third inning single and a sixth inning double.  Perkins got 14 ground ball outs, including two that deflected off her glove to the middle infielders and another that resulted in a 1-6-3 double play.

McLaughlin's three hits and three RBI tied season and career highs, while Danielle Diaz added a pair of singles as well.

FIU fell to 22-22.

The Hatters will take the weekend off from ASUN play and return to action Wednesday against Bethune-Cookman.

Notes:
  • Stetson is now 22-7 at home this season
  • Tori Perkins recorded her 12th career shutout
  • Molly McLaughlin leads the team in RBI (30)
  • Linda Ross improved to 29-for-29 in career stolen bases
  • The game took just 84 minutes to play
