Fritts Hits Walk-Off Dinger as Hatters Defeat B-CU 6-5

Stetson improves to 11-0 in midweek games

DeLand, Fla. -- Maggie Fritts hit the very first pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning over the center field fence to lift Stetson to a 6-5 victory over Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at Patricia Wilson Field.

Tori Perkins (15-9) won her 15th game of the year in the circle as the Hatters improved to 24-17.

It was the second career walk-off home run for Fritts and the first game-winning (non-run-rule) walk-off home run for the Hatters since 2010.

"We were lucky to get out of that one with a win," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "Our defense let us down on more than one occasion, and we gave up some unearned runs.  Tori did a good job and kept us in it, and Maggie came through with the big hit at the end."

Stetson avenged an earlier 15-5 loss to Bethune-Cookman in February at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

"I think after our experience at Disney, it was nice to come out here and get a win," Fritts said.  "I still think we all could have done a little better, but it was nice confidence boost going into a really important series with Upstate."

The game featured three lead changes as the Hatters rallied from 2-0 and 4-3 deficits.  In the bottom of the sixth, Ashly Smith hit a two-out RBI double to tie the game and Lizzie Shubert followed with a single to left to give Stetson a 5-4 lead.

The Wildcats (24-24) turned a lead-off single into a game-tying run in the top of the seventh, but Fritts wasted no time in sending the Hatters home happy in the bottom of the frame.

"Maggie had a nice smooth swing and kept her eyes steady, and it made a world of difference," Griffin said.

Perkins allowed five runs over seven innings, but just two runs were earned as she tied for the ASUN lead in victories.  Shubert went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.  Fritts also had two hits to lead the Hatters.

The last Stetson player to hit a game-winning walk-off home run was Amanda Lindsey vs. Kennesaw State in 2010.

The Hatters will host USC Upstate for a three-game series beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
