Stetson freshman
Eric Foggo had some good swings on Friday night against Lipscomb pitching in the Hatters' ASUN series opener against the Bisons at Melching Field.
Â
All he had to show for his efforts was an 0-for-4 with a couple of loud outs. He got a chance to change that in the 10
th inning, and did so with a two-out RBI single, scoring
Mike Spooner from second base with the winning run in a 3-2 Stetson win.
Â
The Hatters improved to 26-8 overall with the win and, more importantly, 2-2 in ASUN play. The Bisons fell to 15-17 on the season, 3-4 in league play.
Â
The teams are scheduled to play the second game of the series on Saturday evening, with a first pitch at 6:30 p.m. With potential severe weather moving into the area on Sunday, coaches and administrators will get together on Saturday morning to determine if the teams need to play a double-header.
Â
If that is the decision, the games would be set for 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Â
Stetson had plenty of chances to push runs across during the game, especially late, but left runners in scoring position in the second, third, eighth and ninth innings.
Â
Lipscomb did not have nearly as many scoring chances in the game. The Bisons were almost completely bottled up by Stetson junior
Logan Gilbert for eight innings before
Brooks Wilson (3-0) worked the final two frames to get the win.
Â
The only issue for Gilbert was Lipscomb leadoff hitter Lee Solomon. The senior second baseman got the Bisons on the board early, leading off the game with a double, stealing third and then scoring on an infield hit by Zeke Dodson.
Â
The Hatters scored twice in the second off Lipscomb starter Joshua Colon.
Jorge Arenas led off that inning with a ground rule double and scored from third on a
Nico Torino ground ball that was misplayed for an error by Dodson at third. After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Torino scored on an infield single by
Jacob Koos to give the Hatters a 2-1 lead.
Â
It was Solomon again in the sixth inning, leading off with a solo home run off Gilbert to tie the game. The Hatters' hurler had retired 11 straight prior to the Solomon blast, and followed up with eight more consecutive outs before Solomon reached with a two-out single in the eighth.
Â
Overall, Gilbert bounced back nicely from his first loss, allowed just the two runs on five hits over eight innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
Â
After Wilson finished off his second inning of work to start the 10
th, Spooner led off the bottom of the inning with a double off reliever Robbie Knox (1-4). After a ground out failed to advance Spooner, the Bisons walked Wilson intentionally for the second time in the game. A fly ball out brought Foggo to the plate with Spooner still at second. After taking an off speed pitch for a ball, Foggo ripped a single past Dodson at third, allowing Spooner to race home with the winning run.
Â
It was Stetson's third walk-off win of the year and the Hatters' second extra-innings victory.
Â
Solomon produced half the hits in the game for Lipscomb while Arenas was the only Hatter with multiple hits in the game.
