Senger Dominates as Hatters Complete Sweep of Lipscomb

Stetson sophomore Mitchell Senger was determined to finish the job this time around.

After coming within one pitch of a complete-game shutout of Kennesaw State last week before the Owls got a two-run single to tie the game in the ninth inning, Senger closed the deal on Sunday, posting 13 strikeouts against Lipscomb as the Hatters completed a weekend sweep of the Bisons with a 5-0 win at Melching Field.

The shutout was the eighth of the season for Stetson (28-8, 4-2 in ASUN), and the second for Senger, who improved to 5-1 with the win. It was the first time this season for the Bisons (15-19, 3-6) to be shutout. Stetson pitching held Lipscomb to just three runs in sweeping the series.

The 13 strikeouts for Senger were the most he has recorded since his 16-strikeout, no-hit, performance against George Washington in February.

The Bisons managed just one base runner through the first three innings, that coming on an errant throw from Senger to first on a ground ball to open the second. Lipscomb picked up a pair of hits in the fourth inning and one each in the fifth, seventh and ninth, but never got a runner past second base.

Stetson scored all the runs it would need in the third inning of Lipscomb starter Noah Thompson (3-3), picking up four consecutive hits, including three straight doubles, to score three runs. Jonathan Meola got things started with a one-out single before Nick Cardieri, Jacob Koos and Mike Spooner delivered the consecutive two-base hits. Koos plated the first run with his double to center and Spooner drove in the other two with a shot to the wall in left.

That was the only damage the Hatters were able to do against Thompson, who allowed the three runs on six hits over seven innings of work.

The Hatters added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning off reliever Kyle Kemp. Jorge Arenas singled to get things started before Brooks Wilson delivered an RBI double. With two out in the inning, Eric Foggo found the outfield grass on a pop fly to shallow right, scoring Wilson.

Overall, the Hatters banged out five doubles in the game on windy day and also had a triple from Nico Torino. Eight of the nine starters for the Hatters had a hit in the game.

Stetson will now go back onto the road for its next five games, starting on Tuesday night in Tallahassee with the first of a two-game mid-week series against 12th-ranked Florida State (24-12). The Seminoles come into the series having lost five consecutive games, including twice this weekend to Duke. The final game of that series was cancelled due to weather.

Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start while Wednesday's is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Both games are scheduled to be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra, which is a part of the ESPN+ package.

The Hatters will follow the trip to Tallahassee with an ASUN conference series at NJIT in Newark, NJ, next weekend.
