Hatters Edged in Final Minute

Mercer scored the game's final four goals, including the game-winner with 34 seconds to play, as the Bears edged Stetson, 12-11, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.
 
After Riley Reagan gave Stetson (4-12 overall) an 11-8 lead with 7:29 remaining, the Bears went on their game-winning charge. Four different players scored goals during the spurt for Mercer (6-12), including Erica Coyne, who scored the game winner.
 
The Hatters took control of the game, leading 4-1 after Erin Cornell scored the first of her three goals with 18:35 left in the first half.
 
Stetson extended the lead to 8-2 when Cornell capped a run of four straight goals with 3:17 left before halftime. But Mercer edged closer with a pair of goals in the final 42 seconds, trimming Stetson's lead to 8-4 at halftime.
 
The second half started slowly for both teams as heavy rains pounded the field and the players. The Hatters and Bears traded goals to start the half, and Sandra Stephan's goal with 14:27 to play gave Stetson a 10-6 lead.
 
Mercer, however, came to life after that. The Bears scored six of the game's final seven goals over the final 10:03, pulling off the comeback in the final minute.
 
Prior to the game, Stetson honored its seven seniors who were playing in their final home contest. Erin Cornell, Maddie Holvey, Hallie Merz, Devon McKercher, Taylor Patrizi, Kathi Ricci, and Rachel Valocchi made their final appearances at the ATC.
 
Cornell, Patrizi and Reagan each scored three goals for the Hatters. Merz had four points with three assists and a goal, becoming Stetson's single-season leader with 51 points. Liza Diamond had four ground balls in addition to her 10 saves in goal.
 
The Hatters close out the 2018 season when they visit ASUN Conference Jacksonville, 1 p.m., Sunday, April 29.
