Schart Has Hatters in Contention Early at ASUN Championship

Braselton, Ga. – Stetson senior Carolin Schart, the 2018 ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year, got off to a good start at the 2018 ASUN Championship on Sunday, battling through tough weather conditions to post a four-over par 73, good to tie for sixth place overall.

Battling rain and wind, especially late in the round, Schart was even par after a birdie on the par four 11th hole. Conditions began to wear her down late in the round as she posted bogeys on four of her final six holes.

North Florida's Teresa Conroy and Mindy Herrick, along with Jacksonville's Amanda Detmer share the lead after the first round of play at The Legends Course at Chateau Elan. The trio of players finished with two-over par scores of 75, two shots in front of Schart. ASUN Player of the Year Madison Caldwell and Kennesaw State teammate Charlotte Charrayre are tied for fourth place, one shot off the lead.

The efforts of Conroy and Herrick helped UNF to a six shot team lead after the first round of play over favorites Kennesaw State. The two-time defending champion Ospreys finished the day with a 15-over par 307 team score. KSU is second at 313 with Jacksonville (314) and Stetson (318) third and fourth respectively.

Hatters freshman Hanna Kiefer is tied for ninth place after a five-over par opening round of 78. Kiefer had two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys during her round.

Fellow freshman Sarah May is tied for 15th after an opening 81. Senior Paige Kemp is 19th after her opening 82 and sophomore Erikah Neger is 31st after struggling to an 88 in the first round.

Play in round two of the ASUN championship will be delayed on Monday due to heavy rains and thunderstorms that are forecast to roll across north Georgia overnight tonight. The league will make an announcement on Monday morning as to when play will begin, but has already announced that the round will not start before noon.
