Hatters Split With UNF on Saturday

Perkins Tosses Her Fifth Shutout of the Season

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Stetson and North Florida split a pair of one-run decisions Saturday afternoon in an ASUN Conference doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex.

Tori Perkins tossed a five-hit shutout to back the Hatters (25-20, 3-10 ASUN) to a 1-0 victory in Game 1, while the Ospreys bounced back to take Game 2 6-5.  The teams will play the rubber game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"We came in here and split with (UNF) on their turf, and I was happy with that," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We had our chances to win the second game and just didn't make it happen.  Tori pitched a great first game. She came in and did a good job for us in the second game, and hopefully she will be ready to go tomorrow."

Perkins (16-11) needed just 63 pitches to complete her fifth shutout of the season in the opener.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.  The Hatters' defense sparkled behind her as Lizzie Shubert made two stellar plays at short and catcher Blake Crews thwarted a UNF squeeze attempt with a quick tag at the plate in the fifth.

The game remained scoreless, however, until the top of the seventh.  Shubert reached on a hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a Devin Lewis single, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and beat the throw home on Maggie Fritts' grounder to short.

It was Stetson's first 1-0 victory since 2016 and the Hatters' first 1-0 win on the road since the ASUN Championship game in 2014.

Game 2 featured more a lot more scoring as the lead changed hands four times.  Ashly Smith gave the Hatters a 3-1 lead in the top of the third with a three-run double into the leftcenter field gap.  The three RBI put her at the 100 mark for her career.

UNF fought back to take a 4-3 lead in their half of the third, but the Hatters jumped back in front in the fourth.  Danielle Diaz singled down the left field line to score Shubert with the tying run, and Erica Corlew drew a bases loaded walk to put Stetson ahead 5-4.

The Ospreys (23-27, 3-11 ASUN) came back again with a run in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the lead for good.  Stetson put two runners on in the seventh put could not push across the tying run.

Perkins took the loss after working 3.2 innings of relief.

Smith, Diaz and Lewis each had two hits on the day to lead the Hatters.

Stetson remains a half-game ahead of UNF in the race for the final tournament spot with four games remaining in the regular season.
