Jacksonville, Fla. – North Florida came into Sunday's series finale against Stetson hoping to salvage the final game of a home weekend series.
When the Ospreys scored three runs in the fourth inning, it appeared they might get their way, but all the really did was poke a sleeping bear.
The Hatters responded with six runs in the fifth inning and went on to hammer out a season-high 17 hits in a 12-4 victory to complete a weekend sweep. Stetson (34-11, 9-3 in ASUN) won their seventh straight over UNF (19-22, 4-8) and moved into sole possession of first place in the league.
Every Stetson player who had an at bat in the game had at least one hit. Sophomore
Andrew MacNeil, hitting leadoff for the first time in his career, and freshman
Eric Foggo led the way with three hits each. Foggo's day included a two-run single in the Hatters' six-run fifth inning, a three-run home run in the seventh and an RBI single in a three-run ninth.
Sophomore left-hander
Mitchell Senger (6-2) earned the win despite working just five innings in the game. He allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. The trio of
Vlad Nunez,
Chris Gonzalez and
Austin Wood worked the final four innings, combining to allow just one run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
UNF starter Brad Deppermann (0-4) took his second loss of the weekend, allowing six runs, but just one earned, on eight hits over 4.2 innings of work.
The Ospreys got on the board in the fourth inning after Senger walked the first two batters in front of the ASUN leading hitter Tanner Murphy. The sophomore took advantage of the opportunity with a two-run double into the left field corner. Jay Prather followed with a single to give UNF a 3-0 lead before Stetson got out of the inning with a double play.
The Hatters began their rally when
Austin Bogart reached to start the fifth inning on a throwing error by shortstop Mac Wilson. After an
Austin Hale single and a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Ball put two in scoring position,
Jorge Arenas singled in the first Stetson run of the day.
MacNeil followed with an RBI single and then Koos tied the game with a single to left that, along with another error, allowed two runs to score for a 4-3 Stetson lead.
Brooks Wilson singled to score MacNeil and then, after a pitching change, Foggo drove in two more with a single up the middle off Nick Marchese.
Stetson had a chance to add to the lead in the sixth after Hale doubled off Trace Norkus to open the inning. After a ground ball moved Hale to third, Arenas hit a foul pop down the first base line that Berry caught before turning and firing a strike to the plate to cut down Hale trying to score.
The Hatters added three runs in the seventh off reliever Eddie Miller when Foggo hit a wall-scrapping homer to left, just out of the reach of Chris Matthias, scoring MacNeil and Koos on the three-run homer, his fourth of the year.
UNF got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Matthias reached on a one out double off Nunez before scoring on an infield hit by Max Law.
Stetson put the game away in the ninth with four more hits, including a two-run double by
Brooks Wilson and an RBI single by Foggo.
Austin Wood, struck out the side in the ninth inning to close out the sweep.
Besides MacNeil and Foggo, who drove in a team season-high six runs in the game, the Hatters got two hits each from Koos,
Baylen Sparks, Wilson,
Austin Bogart and Hale. The 17 Stetson hits were the most since collecting 18 against Jacksonville on May 6 of last year.
UNF was led at the plate by Dalton Board with two hits.
The Hatters will be back on the road Tuesday night for a single game against FIU (21-22) in Miami before returning home to Melching Field next weekend for a showdown against JU (30-14, 8-4) for the lead in the ASUN next weekend.
