Hatters Drop ASUN Tournament Opener 9-2

DeLand, Fla. -- Logan Morris hit two home runs and drove in six to help lead USC Upstate to a 9-2 victory over Stetson in the first round of the ASUN Championship Wednesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (26-24) drop into the lower bracket and will play an elimination game against Lipscomb at 3 p.m. Thursday.

The Spartans (32-17), who collected 12 hits in the game, advance in the winner's bracket to face FGCU at 10 a.m. Thursday.

"They are a good team and they played well today," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said about USC Upstate.  "We didn't play very well but it was great experience for our freshmen and sophomores who were playing in their first conference tournament game."

After falling behind 3-0 early, the Hatters rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the third.  Kasey Fava singled, stole second, and later scored on a Molly McLaughlin ground out.  Devin Lewis followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Maggie Fritts.

The 3-2 deficit would be as close as Stetson would get, however, as the Spartans tacked on a run in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Christina Biggerstaff pitched four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.  Jaime Tino suffered the loss for the Hatters.

Fava had two of the Hatters' five hits.  Ashly Smith, Lizzie Shubert, and Fritts also singled.
