Tron Griffin Joins Women's Basketball Staff

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson University women's basketball head coach Lynn Bria announced Monday the addition of Tron Griffin to the program as an assistant coach.

Griffin, a Florida native and collegiate coaching veteran, previously assisted at Georgia State, Prairie View A&M and Bethune-Cookman as well as serving as the head coach at Truett McConnell University.

"I've known Tron for a long time, and I have always had a lot of respect for him as a person," Bria said.  "I think we are really fortunate to get someone who has his experience and someone who has the contacts he has in Florida, Georgia, and the southeast.  I think he is a tremendous recruiter and is well respected in our game.  He is from Jacksonville and went to Bethune-Cookman, so it is a really good fit for us and for him.  I think he is going to bring a lot to the team, especially on the defensive end."

Griffin arrives at Stetson after serving the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach at Georgia State. While with the Panthers, he was responsible for scouting, game preparation, the development of post players, and academic support while assisting with recruiting.

"It is truly an honor to be a part of the tradition of academic and athletic excellence here at Stetson," Griffin said.  "I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of such a great program and to work with Coach Bria and the staff to grow and develop championship-caliber student-athletes. My family and I are excited to be back in Florida and a part of the Hatter family."

In 2016-17, Griffin served as head coach at Truett McConnell University, a NAIA program in Cleveland, Ga.  He led the Lady Bears to a 15-16 mark, setting new program records for most overall victories (15), most conference victories (11), and longest home winning streak (6).  The team also posted its highest-ever conference finish in program history.

Griffin made the move to TMU after serving four years as an assistant coach and later associate head coach at Prairie View A&M University in Texas.  While there, Griffin helped lead the Lady Panthers to two SWAC tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament berths (2013, 2014), where they took on the top national seed in Baylor and UConn. During Griffin's tenure, Prairie View posted wins over Memphis, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston State, Nicholls State, and Lamar University and compiled a 7-2 record in SWAC Tournament play.

Prior to his stint at Prairie View A&M, Griffin served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman University. While there, Griffin helped coach Demetria Frank, the 2011-12 NCAA steals leader. Frank went on to play professionally in Puerto Rico and is a current assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman.

Griffin also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Florida State College at Jacksonville where he was responsible for post player development, on-floor coaching, scouting, and recruiting.

In college, Griffin competed for the Bethune-Cookman football team from 2002-06, helping lead the Wildcats to a MEAC Championship in 2002 and the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs in 2002 and 2003.  He was also a member of the men's basketball team during the 2003-04 season. Griffin completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Educational Studies with a concentration on Business Education in 2006.

The Hatters were 17-15 in 2017-18 and advanced to postseason play for the eighth year in a row.
