Hatters Announce 2018-19 Women's Basketball Schedule

Fifteen regular season home games highlight slate

DeLand, Fla. – Fifteen regular season home games plus road contests at Alabama, Tennessee and Texas highlight the 2018-19 Stetson University women's basketball schedule, which was released on Friday.

The slate features 10 opponents who played in the postseason last year, including four NCAA Tournament participants. The Hatters also face 10 20-game winners from a season ago and nine opponents who finished with a top-100 RPI.

"I think I say it every year, but this schedule really is the hardest schedule we have ever had," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We face a ton of teams that played in the postseason, which is what we need.  I like being in a tournament in Nashville and playing three games, and I like being in our tournament and playing three games.  That format is something different we did this year.  Overall, we are going to see a lot of different things in non-conference play that are going to help prepare us for conference, so I really like our schedule."

The Hatters will waste no time getting into the meat of their schedule, opening with a Nov. 6 matinee at Tulsa.  It will be the first-ever meeting between the Hatters and the Golden Hurricane.

Stetson's home opener will follow on Nov. 14 against UCF.  The Hatters are 2-1 against the Knights over the past four seasons.

Women's Basketball ScheduleDuring Thanksgiving weekend, Stetson will travel to Nashville, Tenn. for the Challenge in Music City.  The Hatters will battle mid-major foes Marist, Wright State and Hofstra during the three-day weekend tournament.  Wright State and Marist each played in the WNIT last season.

Stetson will then head straight to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face Alabama on Nov. 27.  The Crimson Tide won 20 games and advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals last season.

On Nov. 30, the Hatters will host Webber International for the annual Volusia County Elementary School game, with a special 11 a.m. tip-off time.

Next, Stetson will visit Thompson-Boling Arena on Dec. 5 for a contest against eight-time national champion Tennessee. The Lady Vols advanced to the NCAA second round last season.

For the second year in a row, the Hatters will travel to Austin, Texas to battle the Texas Longhorns on Dec. 16.  Texas was an NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier and a 28-game winner in 2017-18.

After playing seven of their first nine games on the road, the Hatters will enjoy a six-game homestand beginning with the 31st Annual Hatter Classic Dec. 19-21.  Stetson will face North Dakota, Florida A&M and North Dakota State during the three-day tournament.

Stetson's final two non-conference games will be against Pennsylvania on Dec. 31 and Central State University on Jan. 4.

The revamped and expanded 16-game ASUN slate begins on Jan. 8 as the Hatters will host league-newcomer Liberty at the Edmunds Center.  The Flames won the Big South Conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament last season.

Also joining the ASUN this season is North Alabama. The Hatters and Lions will meet for the first time on Jan. 19 in Florence, Ala.

Other conference road games include match-ups against Lipscomb (Jan. 12), North Florida (Jan. 15), Jacksonville (Jan. 29), Liberty (Feb. 5), NJIT (Feb. 19), Kennesaw State (March 2), and FGCU (March 5).

The home ASUN schedule features tilts against NJIT (Jan. 22), Lipscomb (Jan. 27), Kennesaw State (Feb. 2), Jacksonville (Feb. 12), Florida Gulf Coast (Feb. 16), North Alabama (Feb. 23) and North Florida (Feb. 27).

Following the regular season, the top eight teams in the league will compete for the ASUN Championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The championship format features head-to-head games at campus sites of the higher seeds. Depending on their finish, the Hatters would have the opportunity to host up to three postseason games at the Edmunds Center. The league championship is scheduled for March 17.

Bria begins her 11th season at the helm of the program.  The Hatters have had eight straight winning seasons and have made eight straight postseason appearances.
