Freshmen Lead Hatters Past Upstate

Freshmen ruled the day on Saturday for the Hatters as first-year players Andy Henderson and Lewis Scattergood scored their first career goals, Sebastian Chalbaud had a pair of assists, and fellow freshman Owen Jack recorded his first career shutout in goal as Stetson downed USC Upstate, 2-0, at the Athletic Training Center.

The win was a nice bounce-back effort for the Hatters (3-3-1) after a disappointing weekend last week.

"It was good to see Andy and Lewis get their first goals and nice for Owen to have a clean sheet in his first start," Stetson head coach Cristian Neagu said. "Overall, we are hoping to mature and keep learning. Not by any stretch was this our best effort, but again, we made some plays and we got a good win at home."

After a scoreless first half and a sluggish start to the second half for both teams, the Hatters finally broke through in the 78th minute. Henderson took a pass from Chalbaud at the top of the box and pounded a shot past Upstate (1-5) keeper Andrea Bonavia for a 1-0 lead.

Scattergood came back less than two minutes later and poked in a free kick from Chalbaud just inside the front post as the Hatters grabbed a 2-0 advantage.

Jack and the back line took it from there, thwarting a hard-charging Upstate squad who took three corner kicks in the last three minutes of the game

Stetson out-shot Upstate, 15-5, as Jack made one save. Bonavia stopped five shots for Upstate.

The Hatters are back in action when they visit USF. 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25.
