Hatters Close Strong, Finish Third at Jacksonville Classic

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – Stetson junior Sarah May put a costly mistake on Monday behind her to post of the best rounds of her career on Tuesday to lead the Hatters to a third-place finish at the BubbaBurger Jacksonville Classic.

May, a native of nearby Fleming Island, mistakenly signed an incorrect scorecard following Monday's second round, resulting in her disqualification from the round.

She came back on Tuesday to post birdies on six of her first 13 holes, with two bogeys mixed in, and then parred out to finish with a 68, just one shot off the low round of the tournament.

May's strong performance joined with senior Erikah Neger, who continued her strong start to the season with a two-over par 74 in the final round, finishing the tournament with a six-over par score of 222 to tie for sixth overall. It was her first top 10 finish since she had back-to-back top 10s early in her sophomore season.

Overall, it was the fifth top 10 finish of her career.

With Tuesday's team score of 293, the Hatters moved up two spots in the final tournament standings, surpassing the host team from Jacksonville as well as High Point.

Nova Southeastern coasted to a 15-shot team victory to take home the tournament title for a second straight year. The Sharks, who were led by individual medalist Hanna Ahlander, finished with a three-round total of 875 after a three-over par 291 in the final round.

Ahlander's final round 67 tied the tournament's single round record and her three-round total of 210 (-6) set a new mark for the event over 54 holes. Ahlander had six birdies and one bogey in her final round to surge past day one leader Minori Nagano of Seminole State. Nagano finished four shots back after a final round 74.

Seminole State finished second overall with Stetson six shots back in third.

In addition to the play of May and Neger, Stetson junior Meghan McLean earned a top 15 finish, with her final round 76 leaving her at 224 for the event, tied for 13th. Senior Justine Lauer posted her best round of the event on Tuesday, closing with a 75, to move up nine spots on the leaderboard, finishing tied for 23rd at 228.

Junior Hanna Kiefer finished 51st after a final round score of 78.

The Hatters' two individual players – freshman Wendy Hsiao and sophomore Bianca Sol Cruz – finished tied for 23rd and tied for 56th respectively. Both players finished the event with a 78 in the final round.

Stetson will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood when the team hosts the first Hatter Classic. The players will take part in a College-Am on Sunday morning, with each member of the squad playing with a four-person team of Stetson supporters.

There are still spots available for players or teams interested in playing and supporting Stetson Women's Golf. Contact graduate assistant coach Eilidh Watson for information on participating in the event.

The Hatters will host McNeese State, Navy, Seminole State, Daytona State, Barry University, Lynn University and the Savannah College of Art and Design in the tournament with 36 holes scheduled for Monday, October 7 and a final 18 holes on Tuesday, October 8. There will be a shotgun start both days at 8:30 a.m.
