Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Athletic Communications

Hatters Edged by Liberty

Liberty's Gabrielle Farrell scored the game's only goal in the 55th minute as the ASUN Conference-leading Flames downed Stetson, 1-0, in women's soccer action Thursday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

After a sluggish first half for both teams, the Hatters (2-9-2, 0-3-1) and Flames (8-5-2, 4-1-0) came out with more energy to start the second half.

Farrell had a great chance to give the Flames a lead but her close attempt in the 49th minute hit the left post. That shot led to a counter-attack opportunity for the Hatters. Maggie Struble broke free down the field but her shot attempt from 10 yards out also hit the left post and the game remained scoreless.

Just over five minutes later, Farrell gave the Flames the lead, rebounding in a Lara Bates save of Farrell's previous shot.

From there the Flames held on. Stetson got a few more good looks – Erin McRae had a shot from straight on in the 79th minute and Delaney Peery's attempt about a minute later was just wide – but the Hatters couldn't penetrate the net.

"They finished their one great chance and we didn't and that's been our story lately," Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann said. "I was really excited about the game. I thought we played well. When you compete against the top team in the league, and you could have won, it says a lot when you can do that. We know we can compete with anybody."

Bates finished with one save, while Liberty keeper Melody Jayroe stopped two shots.

The Hatters return to action when they visit North Alabama, Friday, Oct. 18.
