Balanced Hatters Bounce Bisons, 3-1

Three different players scored goals as Stetson emerged with a 3-1 win in an ASUN men's soccer showdown with Lipscomb, Saturday at the Athletic Training center in DeLand.

With the win Stetson (7-5-1 overall, 3-0-1 ASUN) matched last season's win total while also clinching a spot in next month's ASUN Tournament. With North Florida's loss to NJIT, the Hatters are now alone in first place with two conference games to go.

"I'm very proud of the group," Stetson head coach Cristian Neagu said. "We've gradually been getting better each game. Tonight was our best performance of the year, our most complete effort."

The Hatters wasted no time in getting on the board, after nearly scoring on the game's opening kick. Ajmeer Spengler, who was a last-minute starting choice as an injury replacement, made it 1-0 in the third minute on a free kick from 20 yards away.

"Early goals change the momentum of the game and that's something we've been working on," Neagu said. "Ajmeer comes in and makes a big play to set the tone for the rest of the game. I'm so proud of the group."

Stetson maintained its 1-0 lead into the second half before getting some breathing room. In the 50th minute, Chris DeGance scored his team-leading third goal of the season when Gabriel Diniz played a ball from the end line into the box to Lewis Scattergood, and Scattergood found DeGance from 10 yards away.

The lead swelled to 3-0 in the 84th minute as Scattergood scored a goal of his own, using spin move inside the box to score at close range. The goal was set up with a nifty pass by William Suaut.

Lipscomb scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute but it was too little, too late for the Bisons.

Stetson keeper Lute Lillo-Portero made five saves as he narrowly missed his fifth shutout of the season.

Next the Hatters host Florida Atlantic, 6 p.m., Wednesday at the ATC.
