Spirited Hatters Close Season with Narrow Loss to FGCU

Stetson's Lily Truong and Maggie Struble each scored goals but FGCU had just a little bit more as the Hatters closed the 2019 season with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the ASUN Conference leader, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

After going without a goal for the last seven games, the Hatters (2-13-2 overall, 0-7-1 ASUN) drew first blood on Sunday as Truong scored a spectacular goal in the 15th minute.

Marissa Maynes played the ball from midfield to Struble, who was working the right sideline. As she neared the end line, Struble struck a perfect cross to the box and Truong came from behind two defenders for a diving header into the upper left corner of the goal. Stetson had a 1-0 lead.

But the lead didn't last long. FGCU (11-4-1, 6-1-1) quickly tied things up when Evdokia Popadinova chipped a shot over goalkeeper RaeAnna Casler in the 26th minute.

The Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead less than two minutes later as Popadinova again found the back of the net, this time with a header on a scrum in front of the net.

The game remained 2-1 until Struble tied it up in the 65th minute, with an outstanding individual effort. The freshman forward worked around and through several defenders, sending a shot into the right corner and just out of the reach of the FGCU goalkeeper. Struble's seventh goal of the season tied things up at 2-2.

Alyssa Abbadandolo scored the game-winner for the Eagles in the 76th minute when she placed a shot just inside the upper left corner of the net from the far right wing.

"Success is about effort, and do you put everything out on the field? Today you could tell we put forth a fantastic effort," Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann said. "We played unbelievable today. I thought that was awesome."

Stetson said goodbye to five seniors before the game as Lily Ammon Florencia Baldassini, Katie Christenson, Ellie Hackett and Lindsey Parent each appeared at home for the final time.

"It's all about legacy and what you leave behind," Bergmann said. "Our motivation today was the seniors. I thought that showed the class of the underclassmen and putting forth this type of effort for them."
