Jones Leads Hatters to Season-Opening Victory

Christiaan Jones tied a career-high with 23 points in leading Stetson to an 84-26 win over Trinity Baptist in the Hatters' season opener, Tuesday at Edmunds Center.
 
With first-year head coach Donnie Jones making his debut, the Hatters (1-0) ran and pressed their way to an impressive win. Despite the point total the Hatters placed just two players in double figures, with freshman Mahamadou Diawara joining his teammate by adding 10 points.
 
Christiaan Jones was 9 of 12 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers, and 3 of 5 at the line. He also added a career-high 5 steals and 3 assists.
 
Diawara finished 5 of 8 from the field and added 3 rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time. All 13 Hatters who dressed saw action on Tuesday, and 12 of them scored. Even walk-on Alex Ionesco got into the act with 3 assists and 2 rebounds in seven minutes.
 
The Hatters jumped out to an 18-5 lead less than eight minutes into the first half and pushed the advantage to 44-17 at halftime. Stetson's cushion reached 30 points for the first time when Rob Perry's jumper with 17:49 to play gave the Hatters a 48-17 lead.
 
Jones gave Stetson a 40-point advantage with a 3-pointer at 12:17 as Stetson surged to a 61-20 lead, and the Hatters secured a 50-point lead with 7:48 left when Terry Ivery sank a 3-pointer to make it a 73-22 game.
 
The Hatters shot 51 percent from the field and 38 percent (11-29) from 3-point range, all while holding the Eagles to 14.5 percent shooting for the game.
 
Up next for the Hatters is a visit to Macomb, Ill., where they will face Western Illinois, 8 p.m., Saturday.
 
Notes:
  • Stetson finished with 23 assists, its most since dishing 26 against Johnson in the 2018-19 season opener
  • The Hatters had 12 assists; their most since also having 12 against Missouri State last November,
  • Stetson's 11 blocked shots are the most by a Stetson team in at least 15 years
  • Four Hatters had at least two blocked shots: Jahlil Rawley (3), Joel Kabimba, Christiaan Jones & Cyriaque Foucart (2 each)
  • The Hatters improved to 18-0 when opening the season at home
