Hatters Visit South Carolina on Monday

The Hatters say goodbye to 2019 when Stetson men's basketball faces South Carolina, 3 p.m., Monday, in Columbia, S.C. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.

After a weeklong break from games, the Hatters (5-9) are preparing for their final non-conference challenge of the season. Stetson is also looking to right the ship as the Hatters are mired in the midst of a four-game losing streak following an 83-67 loss to FIU on Dec. 22 in DeLand.

One bright spot from the loss to FIU was the play of freshman center Mahamadou Diawara, who finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds to earn ASUN Conference Newcomer of the Week honors.

South Carolina (8-4) is coming off its best win of the season as the Gamecocks knocked off defending national champion Virginia (70-59) back on Dec. 22 in Charlottesville, Va.

About the Game
•Stetson plays its final non-conference game of the season on Monday when the Hatters visit South Carolina
•ASUN Conference play begins for Stetson on Thursday, Jan. 2, when the Hatters host defending league champion Lipscomb
•Monday's game will be a homecoming for Stetson junior guard Christiaan Jones. A Columbia native, Jones is a 2017 Cardinal Newman graduate.
•This is Stetson's first game against an SEC opponent since the Hatters visited Alabama on Dec. 29, 2016.
•Stetson is 22-73 all-time against current SEC member schools. The Hatters' last win over an SEC foe was a 56-52 victory at Georgia on Dec. 31, 2004.
•Of Stetson's 22 wins versus the SEC, 14 of them have come against Florida, a team Stetson first played in 1919 and has faced a total of 66 times. Stetson's last win over the Gators was during the 1983-84 season. The Hatters also have wins against Auburn (1), Georgia (4), Ole Miss (1) and South Carolina (2).

Under the Hat
•Rob Perry (15.1) and Mahamadou Diawara (13.8) are the highest-scoring freshman tandem in the ASUN Conference at a combined 28.9 points per game. Perry is 15th nationally among all freshmen, and his 34 points at Western Illinois on Nov. 9 is the 2nd-best single-game effort by a freshman this season.
•Perry and Diawara also rank 1-2 on the Hatters in both scoring and rebounding (7.0 per game for Diawara, 5.1 for Perry).
•Rob Perry scored 34 points against Western Illinois on Nov. 9, the most by a Stetson freshman since 1983. He earned ASUN Newcomer of the Week honors for his performance.
•The Hatters made some history on Dec. 17 when five freshmen were in the starting lineup at UNC Asheville, for what's believed to be the first time in program history. The Hatters regularly started four freshmen during the 2010-11 season (Corey Walden Luis Jacobo, Steve Forbes, Aaron Graham) but research has not yet turned up another all-freshman starting five.
•Through games of Dec. 28, Stetson freshman Mahamadou Diawara is 15th nationally overall in field-goal percentage (.625) and 3rd among all freshmen, trailing only Arizona's Zeke Nnaji (.696) and Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis (.656).
