Hatters Fall Twice on Opening Day

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson dropped both ends of a season-opening doubleheader to Indiana State, falling 6-4 in game one and 10-2 in game two Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (0-2) committed nine errors on the day which led to 10 unearned runs for the Sycamores (2-0).

"I thought it was a pretty pitiful effort, especially when you consider the number of unearned runs we gave up and the number of baserunners we left on base," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We could have easily won both those games and we just played terrible.  I believe we are going to improve over the showing we had today because we have too much talent."

Ashly Smith led the way with three hits, including a pair of doubles in game one.  Her fourth inning two-bagger split the leftcenter gap and scored Elizabeth Jackson all the way from first.  Jackson beat the throw home with a head first dive across the plate.  Devin Lewis added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Hatters left the potential tying runs in scoring position.

Tori Perkins went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.

In game two, Stetson collected just four hits off of Indiana State pitching.  Riley Russell forced in a run with a bases loaded walk, and Danielle Diaz drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

Jaime Tino allowed two earned runs over five innings of work.

For the day, Stetson was 0-for-5 with the bases loaded and 2-for-21 with runners in scoring position.  The Hatters left 14 runners on base.

The teams will conclude their three-game series at noon on Sunday.
