Hatters See Season End at Kennesaw

Stetson men's basketball saw its 2018-19 season come to an end on Friday as the Hatters couldn't hang on against Kennesaw State in an 83-82 loss to the Owls at the KSU Convocation Center.

The loss eliminates Stetson (7-24 overall, 3-13 ASUN) from contention for next week's ASUN Tournament. Kennesaw State (6-25, 3-13) advances as the tourney's No. 8 seed.

Kennesaw State's Tyler Hooker scored a game-high 36 points on 13 of 25 shooting. But it was two free throws by Kosta Jankovic with 1:09 to go which proved to be the difference.

In a back-and-forth game which featured four ties and 10 lead changes, both teams squandered double-digit leads. Stetson overcame a 12-point deficit in the first half to lead at halftime. But after twice building a 10-point advantage in the second half, Stetson was unable to hang on as the Hatters went the final 3:53 without scoring.

Stetson trailed, 34-22, with 9:02 remaining in the first half but the Hatters went on a 25-11 run and led, 47-45, at halftime. Stetson's bench had a 33-10 advantage in scoring in the first half as Christiaan Jones (16), Ricardo Lynch (8), Marques Sumner (7) and Adam Webb (4) provided the offense.

The Hatters came out strong in the second half, eventually building as much as a 64-54 lead with 13:58 to play. But after that, Kennesaw State came alive on the offensive end and the Hatters faltered. Stetson made just eight field goals in the final 14 minutes, the last coming when Sumner's 3-pointer gave Stetson an 82-81 lead with 3:53 to go.

Neither team scored again until Jankovic's free throws made it 83-82. The Hatters had two possessions to take the lead or tie, but shots by Jones and Lynch each missed the mar as the Hatters came up short.

Jones finished the game with 19 points for Stetson. Abayomi Iyiola added 18 points and 7 boards, and Sumner finished with 10.
