Hatters Football Completes Staff for 2019

Stetson University head football coach Roger Hughes completed his coaching staff for the 2019 season with the hiring of two new assistant coaches.

Veteran coach Steve Davis has joined the staff and will serve as the Hatters' defensive backs coach. Davis replaces Bob Majeski, who coaches the Hatters' linebackers for the past four seasons. Majeski left the staff to become the head coach at Panhandle State in Oklahoma.

In addition to Davis, the other new member of the staff is receivers coach Kyle Faxlanger, who started his career as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, South Alabama, last year.

"I am so excited we were able to hire Steve," Hughes said. "He has a wealth of coaching experience, having served on staffs that have had great success at the highest level. Additionally, he has coached numerous players who have succeeded at the NFL level.

"Kyle will also be a great addition to our staff. He brings great energy and enthusiasm, and is knowledgeable beyond his years."

Steve Davis

Davis has a long history of developing NFL talent, and most recently completed a 14-year run as defensive coordinator at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. During his tenure there the Bulldogs had an undefeated national championship team in 2007 to go with three state championships and seven South Division crowns.

Originally from Union Chapel, Ala., Davis was an All-Gulf South Conference player at Livingston University (now West Alabama). He is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame and was named to the school's Team of the Decade.
After graduating with a bachelor's and master's from Livingston, he went on to be defensive coordinator at East Mississippi Community College before moving North Alabama as defensive backs coach where he spent five years.

A licensed pilot, Davis returned to his alma mater as defensive coordinator in 1985 before spending four years as defensive backs coach at Southern Miss. From there he spent three seasons at LSU followed by another at Auburn. He spent two seasons at Troy, including an unbeaten 11-win regular season in 1995.

Davis moved on to coach linebackers at Tulane in 1997-98, including the Green Wave's historic undefeated 1998 season. He returned to Southern Miss in 1999 and, after a stint as a high school coach, he served as defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee from 2001-03.

Davis and his wife, Brenda, have a daughter, Whitney, and four grandchildren.

Kyle Faxlanger

Faxlanger is a native of New London, Conn., who spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at South Alabama, working with the Jaguars receivers and special teams. While still an undergrad at USA, Faxlanger served as a student assistant coach.

Prior to his time at USA, Faxlanger worked at Godby High School in Tallahassee as assistant quarterbacks coach during the 2013 season. He also worked with the quarterbacks at Chickasaw High in Alabama during the 2014 season.

Faxlanger received his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from South Alabama in 2016 and complete work on his M.Ed. in Educational Leadership for Higher Education in December 2018.

The newest members of the Hatters coaching staff will be on Watson Field at the Athletic Training Center Tuesday morning when the Hatters open spring drills. The team will practice each Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. and each Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. through April 13 when the team will play its annual spring game at Spec Martin Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
