Tori Perkins fires a four-hit shutout

DeLand, Fla. -- Tori Perkins threw a four-hit shutout as Stetson defeated Bethune-Cookman 3-0 Sunday afternoon in the 100th all-time meeting between the two Volusia County schools.

Ashly Smith, Maddie Marchiando and Riley Russell each drove in runs for the Hatters (7-13), who finished the Stetson Invitational with a 2-2 mark.

"I thought Tori pitched a good game today," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "Our defense was solid.  Our freshman Maddie came in and accounted for two runs.  I was real proud of her."

Perkins was sharp once again, throwing just 66 pitches in the complete game effort.  She walked none, struck out four, and stranded runners at third base in the first and sixth innings.

The Hatters backed Perkins with single runs in the first, second and sixth innings.  Allie Carroll had five hits on the weekend including a double and a run scored on Sunday.

"Allie is starting to calm down and play like I know she is capable of playing," Griffin said.  "She is looking better at third base.  Sometimes it takes a few games for a freshman to settle down and relax, and I think she's there."

Elizabeth Jackson finished the weekend 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate with three walks and three runs scored.  She and Perkins (2-0, 0.00 ERA) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Hatters have three doubleheaders remaining before the start of conference play.

"Generally speaking, I have been disappointed so far this year," Griffin added.  "We haven't played well.  I think we are pressing, and the players agree.  You go a couple of at-bats and you don't get a hit, the next thing you know you are trying to hard.  You're talking rhythm and timing, and that's what hitting is all about.  Hopefully by the time conference rolls around we will be playing better."

Stetson will host UMASS at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
