Hatters Split with UMASS Wednesday

Stetson walks off in the ninth inning in game one

DeLand, Fla. -- Blake Crews scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Stetson (8-13) defeated UMASS 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Minutewomen (10-12) won game two 15-2.

Tori Perkins pitched a complete game in the opener to improve to 7-4 on the season.  She allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out two over nine innings of work.

Ashly Smith drove in the game's first run with an infield single in the bottom of the fifth.

A solo home run by UMASS tied the game in the sixth, and the score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth.

Lizzie Shubert led off with a walk and moved to third when Crews' sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed.  After a ground out and a tag out at the plate left runners on the corners with two outs, Elizabeth Jackson's grounder to second was bobbled allowing Crews to scamper home with the winning run.

Stetson managed just five hits in game one and only three hits in game two.  Kara Saylor scored a run and Lauren Klitenick walked in their Hatter debuts.

Stetson will host UCF on Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
