Hatters Drop ASUN Conference Opener at NJIT

Stetson women's tennis opened the ASUN Conference season with a 4-3 loss to NJIT, Saturday at Namoli Center in Newark, N.J.

Playing indoors for the first time this spring, the Hatters (9-5 overall, 10-1 ASUN) dropped the doubles point and lost three of the first four singles matches as NJIT (12-2, 0-1) clinched the victory. Still, Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant was pleased with his team's effort.

"We fought extremely hard today, especially Danielle Peele and Alexe Viaud," Sandlant said. "Full credit to NJIT. They played well indoors today."

After falling in doubles, the Hatters lost singles matches on Courts 4 & 1 as they fell into a 3-0 hole. Brooke Milner kept the Hatters in the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win on Court 3, but NJIT grabbed the victory with a straight set win on Court 2.

Despite the Hatters being on the hook for the loss, Peele and Viaud battled their way to three-set victories. Peele pulled out a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win on Court 5, and Viaud captured a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) victory on Court 6.

The Hatters return to action when they visit conference foe North Florida on Saturday, March 23 in Jacksonville.
