It took everything the Stetson Hatters had on Saturday night, but that was just enough to take a 5-4 victory over Georgetown in the fourth game of the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational.
Â
Saint Louis defeated Sacred Heart 9-7 in 10 innings in Saturday's opening game.
Â
Stetson (3-6) fell behind 2-0 early against the Hoyas (2-7) as starting pitcher
Robbie Peto allowed single runs in the third and fifth innings. It was a two-out single by Kai Nelson in the third that scored the first Georgetown run after a pair of walks.
Â
In the fifth the Hoyas picked up three consecutive two out singles before Peto walked Michael Willis on a 3-2 pitch to give Georgetown a 2-0 lead.
Â
Hatters freshman
Danny Garcia (1-0) came on to get Stetson out of trouble in that inning and then worked two more scoreless frames to earn his first win.
Â
Stetson finally got to Georgetown starter Brent Killam (0-3) in the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits with the help of an error on Killam and a wild pitch. Freshman
Mark Townsend singled to drive in
Nick Cardieri with the first run and
Austin Bogart followed with a two-run single to put the Hatters in the lead.
Â
Jonathan Meola delivered a sacrifice fly to score Townsend and make it 4-2.
Â
From there, the teams swapped runs in the late innings. Georgetown scored in the eighth when Ryan Weisenberg drew a walk off Bogart to start the inning. Yareb Martinez followed with a single to move pinch runner James Gabor to third. Tony Barreca delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.
Â
Stetson answered that run in the bottom of the inning when
Eric Foggo led off with a hit, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Baylen Sparks.
Â
Bogart went back to the mound in the ninth, and recorded a strikeout to start the inning, before senior
Vlad Nunez came in from the pen. Nunez allowed consecutive hits, with a wild pitch in between, allowing the Hoyas to score a run on a ground out. Another hit moved the tying run to third before Nunez got out of the inning, earning his first save of the year.
Â
Stetson managed just seven hits in the game, with Townsend accounting for two. Nelson led the Hoyas' 13-hit attack with four singles while Eddie McCabe added three hits.
Â
The schedule for the final day of the tournament will see Georgetown take on Saint Louis at 11 a.m. before the Hatters host Sacred Heart in a game scheduled for 3 p.m. Stetson and Sacred Heart will take a day off on Monday before playing two more games this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
