Hatters Earn Extra Inning Win Over Texas Tech

Lubbock, Texas – Junior Jorge Arenas picked up one of the bigger hits of his collegiate career on Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park when he singled home Jacob Koos in the 10th inning in a 7-5 Stetson victory over No. 13 Texas Tech.

The heroics in extra innings were needed after the Red Raiders (15-6) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Sophomore Chris Gonzalez (3-0) gave up the game-tying two-run double to pinch hitter Doug Facendo after Vlad Nunez hit consecutive Texas Tech batters with one out in the inning.

Gonzalez went back out for the ninth and worked around a one-out single to close out Texas Tech.

For Stetson (9-13), the victory was the second this year in extra innings in as many chances.

The Hatters found themselves in position to get the win because of the outing turned in by freshman left-hander Daniel Paret. In seven innings on the mound, Paret allowed just two runs on three hits despite walking five and striking out just four.

For the second straight day, Stetson jumped on top early. The Hatters got a double from Andrew MacNeil to lead off the game and Mark Townsend followed with an RBI single. After a strikeout and pair of walks, Jacob Koss delivered a two-run single for a 3-0 Stetson lead.

Texas Tech got one of the runs back in the bottom of the innings when Dru Baker and Josh Jung delivered back-to-back doubles off Paret. The Hatters avoided further damage thanks to instant replay, which overturned a save call at first to end the inning.

The Red Raiders cut the Stetson lead to 3-2 in the third on a pair of walks, a pair of stolen bases and a sacrifice fly.

Stetson got a run back in the fourth on a pair of walks that ended the day for Tech starter Mason Montgomery, a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball.

The Hatters added a key insurance run in the eighth inning when Nick Cardieri blasted his first homer of the year to put Stetson up 5-2.

Tech got one of the runs back in the eighth on a two-out single up the middle by Cameron Warren. After a walk loaded the bases, Nunez got a strikeout to end the inning.

Koos led off the 10 for Stetson with a single off Tech freshman Clayton Beeter (0-1). Koos stole second and then Cardieri drew a walk, bringing Arenas to the plate. He drove the second pitch he saw back through the box to score Koos with the go-ahead run.

A pair of wild pitches followed, the second of which allowed Austin Dilbert, who pinch ran for Cardieri, to score an insurance run.

The Hatters were led offensively by Koos, Cardieri and Arenas with two hits each. Dylan Neuse had two of the seven hits in the game for the Red Raiders.

The teams will close out their two-game series on Monday afternoon. The start time for the contest has been backed up to noon local time, 1 p.m. in DeLand.
