Hatters Take Series From Jacksonville

Molly McLaughlin Goes 3-for-5 with a Double

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Stetson scored five runs in the third inning and five more in the seventh en route to a 12-4 victory over Jacksonville Sunday afternoon at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

After dropping the series opener on Saturday, the Hatters (11-17, 2-1 ASUN) scored 21 runs over the final two games to earn their first ASUN series win since 2016.

"I was real proud of the way we came back," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We got down three runs early in the game and we battled back.  We finally got to their pitcher and we continued to score.  It was just a good day for Hatter softball."

Stetson pounded out 12 hits as a team on Sunday, going 8-for-21 with runners on base and 3-for-4 with the bases loaded.

"In the beginning, we were swinging at a lot of balls up in the zone, but we decided to be more patient and I think helped us have more success," Ashly Smith said.

Smith celebrated her birthday with a three-RBI game, two of which came on a bases-loaded double in the top of the third inning.

Kasey Fava went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Molly McLaughlin also had three hits and an RBI.  Riley Russell recorded two hits, two walks, a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI.  Elizabeth Jackson and Maddie Marchiando each scored twice and drove in a run.

Tori Perkins (9-6) went the distance in the circle, allowing one earned run and nine hits while striking out three.  The Dolphins (13-18, 1-2) left nine runners on base.

"Tori did a great job," Griffin said.  "This is the second day they have seen her and she still managed to keep them under control.  She is very consistent and confident right now."

The series win puts the Hatters in a tie for second place in the league standings.

"We needed a boost of confidence going forward here in the conference season, and I think these two games really helped," McLaughlin said.  "Everybody did a really great job today, and I couldn't be more proud of our team."

Stetson will host North Alabama next weekend for a three-game series at Patricia Wilson Field.  The teams will play at doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
