Offensive Surge Continues in 13-8 Win Over UNA

Florence, Ala. – The Stetson baseball team continued its best run of offensive production of the year on Saturday, scoring a season-high 13 runs in a 13-8 series clinching victory over North Alabama.

The Hatters (12-14, 2-0), who have scored 35 runs in their last three games, will go for the sweep on Sunday. Stetson has now won 15 consecutive games overall, 11 straight in regular season play, against ASUN opponents.

North Alabama fell to 4-21 overall in their first year of Division I play. The Lions are 0-5 in ASUN competition.

The Hatters posted their second best hit total of the year on Saturday, banging out 14 hits against four UNA pitchers. Stetson turned those hits into four multi-run innings, including four runs in the second, and four more in the eighth to put the game away.

Eight of the Hatters' nine starters had at least one hit in the game, and six Stetson players drove in runs. Some of the highlights included:
  • Benito Varela delivered a two-run single to get things started in the Hatters' four-run second off UNA starter Kyle Moore (0-2). The other two runs in the inning scored on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly.
  • After UNA's Landon Langston blasted a three-run home run off Stetson starter Daniel Paret (1-0) in the bottom of the second, fellow freshman E.J. Doskow blasted the first pitch in the top of the third to straight-away center for his second homer of the year and a 5-3 Stetson lead.
  • The Lions cut the lead to 5-4 on an RBI triple by Reid Homan in the fourth, but the Hatters answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, chasing the UNA starter. The runs scored when Varela, with one out and the bases loaded, hit a low pop fly behind second base. Baylen Sparks tagged on the play and came home, scoring ahead of an errant throw. Austin Bogart, who was the primary distraction on the play, advanced on the throwing error and then scored on a wild pitch.
  • Leading 7-5 going to the eighth, the Hatters scored four runs off reliever Hunter Davidson. Andrew MacNeil delivered a two-run single, stole second and then scored on a Jacob Koos double. Sparks singled him home for an 11-5 lead.
  • UNA came right back, scoring three unearned runs off freshman reliver Danny Garcia in the bottom of the inning. A two-out error opened the door and was followed by a hit and a hit batter to load the bases. Ben Kiefer singled home two runs and a third scored on a balk by Garcia.
  • Jorge Arenas accounted for the last two runs, doubling home pinch-runner Austin Dilbert after a Doskow hit and then scoring on consecutive wild pitches.
Koos continued his hot hitting for the Hatters, picking up two more hits to go with his four on Friday. Arenas also picked right back up after going hitless in the series opener with three on Saturday. Sparks and Doskow also had two hits each.

Paret went five innings, allowing four runs on just three hits with four walks and five strikeouts to get his first win.

Sophomore Robbie Peto (0-4) will try for his first win of the year on Sunday when he squares off against UNA sophomore left-hander Jacob Laws (1-4). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
