Geurinckx Helps Hatters to Comeback Victory

Stetson's Vicky Geurinckx battled to a thrilling three-set victory in the day's final match to clinch a team win and send Stetson to an important 4-3 ASUN Conference victory over FGCU, Saturday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Stetson (10-6, 1-2) was starting at its third straight conference loss before Geurinckx picked up her teammates with an impressive victory on Court 4.

With the team match tied at 3-3, Geurinckx was the last Hatter standing. The sophomore, who never before clinched a team victory, survived a 0-6 result in the first set and followed up with a pair of 6-4 wins in sets two and three. After clinching match point, Geurinckx was mobbed by her teammates.

"I started the third set thinking that I won the second set playing my best tennis," Geurinckx said. "So I thought that I just needed to keep going. I also knew the third set be a mental test and I'm good mentally. I knew I would fight to the end. That's what made the match turn my way."

While Geurinckx was aware that a loss would mean an 0-3 start to conference play for the Hatters, she tried her best to block that out of her mind during the third set.

"I was not thinking about that during the match otherwise I probably would have lost," Geurinckx said. "I was trying to play each point one at a time and I got the win for the team."

While Geuricnkx was the hero for clinching the match, her efforts were only made possible and necessary by similar efforts from Alexe Viaud on Court 5. The Hatters' lone senior, Viaud also earned a three-set victory, winning 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 to force a deciding match for Geurinckx.

Stetson opened the day by winning the doubles point. Danel Ashirova & Lucie Renault were 6-3 winners on Court 4, while Geurickx & Brooke Milner were 7-6 victors on Court 2.

Singles started poorly for Stetson, as the Hatters dropped matches on Courts 5, 2 and 1 before Milner posted their first victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win on Court 3.

Milner's win set the stage for Viaud and Geurinckx.

The Hatters continue ASUN play when they visit Liberty, 11 a.m., Thursday, April 4 in Lynchburg, Va.
