Hatters Blow Past Maryland 12-7

Stetson freshman E.J. Doskow introduced himself to the visiting Maryland Terrapins in a big way on Saturday night at Melching Field.

Doskow came off the bench to pinch hit in the seventh inning with the Hatters trailing 7-6 after Maryland (8-5) scored four runs in the top of the inning. With a pair of Hatters on base, Doskow was the first man to face Maryland reliever Mark DeLuia in the inning.

DeLuia fell behind Doskow 2-0 and came with a fastball to try to get back into the count. The Miami native was waiting, and pounced on the pitch, blasting a three-run home run that cleared the light tower in left field, sparking Stetson (6-8) to a 12-7 victory in the second game of the weekend series.

The game was a see-saw affair early, with both starting pitchers having shaky first innings. Stetson freshman Daniel Paret allowed two hits and two walks in his first inning, with Maxwell Casted driving home a pair of runs for a 2-0 Terps lead.

Stetson answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring three times off Maryland starter Zach Thompson on a pair of hits, a walk and a pair of Terrapins errors. Jonathan Meola had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to give the Hatters a 3-2 lead.

Maryland tied the game in the third when Chris Alleyne led off with a ground rule double to center, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Hatters broke the tie, and chased Thompson, in the fifth inning, manufacturing a run when Jacob Koos led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball to first by freshman Noah Dickerson.

Stetson added to the lead in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs against the first of six Maryland relievers, Daniel O'Connor. Meola was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second and then scored on a hit by Jorge Arenas. Arenas moved up two bases on a wild pitch by the second Terps pitcher of the inning, Sean Fisher, and then scored on a wild pitch from Elliot Zoellner (0-2).

Maryland rallied against Paret, who was sparkling through the middle innings for Stetson. The left-hander worked into the seventh and finished with 11 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Terrapins loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a walk to start the seventh, and all three runners came around to score.

After freshman Bret Neilan (1-0) came in to pitch, Maryland got its first run on a fielders' choice ground ball. After a strikeout and a walk reloaded the bases with two out, Costes delivered again for Maryland with a three-run double to put the Terps up 7-6.

That is when things got really fun. Austin Bogart led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but things looked as if they wouldn't go the Hatters' way after a ground out and a strikeout left the Hatters with a runner at first with two away. Kyle Ball kept the inning alive, drawing a walk, to set the stage for Doskow's heroics.

Maryland threatened in the eighth, getting a runner to third with two out before Vlad Nunez got a fly ball to Koos in center to end the threat.

The Hatters added three insurance runs in the ninth despite only getting one hit, a bunt single by Bogart. Two Hatters were hit by pitches to load the bases. A wild pitch scored one before a Nick Cardieri ground out scored another and an Arenas sacrifice fly added the third.

Nunez retired the Terrapins in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

Bogart and Meola had two hits each to lead Stetson to the win. Costes had three of the seven hits in the game for Maryland and drove in five of the seven runs. Alleyne also added a pair of hits for the Terrapins.

On Sunday, Bogart will make his first start on the mound since March 14 last year against Army when he allowed five unearned runs in 1.2 innings in an 8-4 loss. It will be the seventh start on the mound in Bogart's career.

He will be opposed by Maryland freshman right-hander Trevor LaBonte (0-0, 1.46).

The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
