Hatters Sweep Bethune-Cookman

Stetson scores four in the bottom of the seventh to win

DeLand, Fla. -- Elizabeth Jackson recorded her second straight walk-off single in game 1 and Ashly Smith hit a three-run double in game 2 as Stetson swept a doubleheader from Bethune-Cookman 8-7 and 6-4 Tuesday at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (14-19) rallied for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the opener in dramatic fashion.  Stetson had trailed 3-1, 6-3, and 7-4.

"I was real proud of the way they came back in that first game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "A lot of teams would have folded and they didn't. They kept pecking away and putting together some hits.  We were three runs down and the next thing you know we won the ball game."

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hatters loaded the bases with no outs but two force outs at home plate left the bags still loaded with two away.  Maddie Marchiando then delivered a two-run single to center to cut the deficit to 7-6.

After a wild pitch put the winning runs in scoring position, Kasey Fava hit a grounder into the 5-6 hole.  Marchiando beat the shortstop's throw over to third allowing Linda Ross to score the tying run.

That brought Jackson to the plate, and unlike her nine-pitch at-bat to win Sunday's game against North Alabama, Jackson singled to left on the very first pitch to score Marchiando with the winning run.

Tori Perkins (11-7) went the distance in the circle to win her 11th game of the season.

In game 2, the Hatters scored a run in the second and five in the fifth to stake Jaime Tino to a 6-0 lead.  The Wildcats (12-25) scored four in the seventh to make it a two-run game, but Tino (3-11) fanned Kaira Cabato with the tying runs aboard to seal the victory.

Offensively, Danielle Diaz tripled and scored in the second inning and added an RBI single in the fifth.  Smith hit a bases-clearing double in the five-run fifth.  Devin Lewis also drove in a run.

The Hatters had 19 hits on the day, including five by Marchiando.  She was 5-for-6 in doubleheader with two runs, two RBI, and three stolen bases.

"Maddie had a hot hand, and Danielle came through in the second ball game with a triple and a single," Griffin said. "It was good to see them swinging the bats."

Stetson has now won three in a row and five out of seven.

The Hatters will visit Liberty for a three-game series in Lynchburg this weekend.
