Hatters Drop Two at Liberty

Lynchburg, Va. -- Liberty hit four home runs in a 5-3 and 6-0 sweep of visiting Stetson Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Softball Stadium.

The Hatters (14-21, 3-5 ASUN) led 3-0 in Game 1, but the Flames (26-14, 8-3 ASUN) scored two in the fifth and three in the seventh to walk-off with the victory.

Liberty's Julia Dimartino and Chase Cassady combined on a shutout in Game 2.

Ashly Smith and Riley Russell led the Hatters with two hits apiece on the day. Smith recorded an RBI single in the opener and hit her 10th double of the season in Game 2.  She now has 32 doubles in her career.

Lizzie Shubert also had an RBI single and Molly McLaughlin drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Tori Perkins went the distance in Game 1 and Jaime Tino and Curstin Taylor combined in the circle in Game 2.

Stetson made several outstanding plays on defense. Shubert threw a runner out at the plate from her knees at second base, Allie Carroll made a diving catch on a bunt attempt, and McLaughlin went to her backhand to stab a grounder up the middle and fired a strike to home plate for a force out.  The Hatters also turned two double plays on the day.

The teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
