Hatters Down FGCU in Extras, 3-2

Molly McLaughlin records her 100th career hit

Fort Myers, Fla. -- After nine scoreless innings, Stetson broke through with three runs in the top of the 10th and held on for a 3-2 victory over FGCU Sunday afternoon at the FGCU softball complex.

Ashly Smith, Riley Russell and Molly McLaughlin each drove in runs in the 10th inning as the Hatters (16-28, 5-12) took the final game of the three-game series.

Tori Perkins (13-14) went the distance, allowing eight hits and one earned run over 10 innings for her 49th career victory.

With the international tiebreak rules in effect, Kasey Fava remained at second on Elizabeth Jackson's lead-off single in the top of the 10th.  Smith then singled to left to score Fava, and Jackson moved to third on a fly out by Devin Lewis.  Russell's squeeze-bunt single scored Jackson with the second run of the inning.  McLaughlin drove in a key insurance run with an RBI single to center.  It was her 100th career hit.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Eagles (28-17, 13-4) scored twice and put the tying run at third with two outs, but McLaughlin snared a short pop fly off the bat of Brooke Clemens to seal the victory.

The Hatters posted 12 hits in the game, their most since April 2.  Maddie Marchiando went 3-for-4, while Fava, Jackson and McLaughlin collected two hits apiece.

FGCU had eight hits and left 10 runners on base.

It was Stetson's longest game since March of 2017.

The Hatters will host UNF next weekend at Patricia Wilson Field with a berth in the ASUN tournament on the line.  Whichever team wins the series will be the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament.
