Pete Dunn Elected to Florida Sports Hall of Fame

Former Stetson baseball coach Pete Dunn has been elected to numerous halls of fame during his illustrious career, but in November he will crown his career as the Hatters coach with induction into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will take place on Tuesday night, November 12, at the Amway Center in Orlando.

Dunn, who led the Stetson baseball program from 1980 to 2016, amassing 1,312 career victories, is already a member of the Stetson University Athletics Hall of Fame, the Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame, the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame and the American Baseball Coaches Association Halls of Fame.

He will become just the second college baseball coach in the Hall of Fame, joining with legendary University of Miami coach Rob Fraser, who was inducted in 1986. He will also be just the second coach from Stetson University in the Hall, joining with former basketball coach Glenn Wilkes, who was inducted in 1981.

Dunn will also be just the ninth inductee to the hall from the sport of baseball. He will join Fraser, former MLB player and manager Al Lopez, former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, 1940s era pitcher Truett "Rip" Sewell, former Dodgers pitcher and current Braves announcer Don Sutton as well as a trio of modern era players – Johnny Damon, Gary Sheffield and Dunn's Godson, Chipper Jones, who was inducted in 2017.

The 2019 induction class is a star-studded group. In addition to Dunn, former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek will represent the sport of baseball. Others in the class include Pat Williams (basketball), Annika Sorenstam (golf), Daunte Culpeper (football), Nick Anderson (basketball), Chris Weinke (football), Chick Rohe (track), David Little (football), Winston Dubose (soccer) and Lois Webb (volleyball).

Florida Sports Hall of Fame president Barry Smith announced the 2019 class.

"This class truly represents what is great about sports in Florida," Smith said.  "These 11 new inductees have reached the pinnacle in seven different sports.  Collectively, these honorees have either played in or won college or professional championships, captured golf majors, represented their country on national teams, or played significant roles in the history of sports in this state. It is an incredibly accomplished and deserving class."
