Hatters Fall in Season-Opener

Grand Canyon's Emma Anderson scored the game's only goal in the 65th minute as the Antelopes handed Stetson a 1-0 loss in the season opener for both teams, Thursday at the Athletic Training Center.

The debut of Stetson first-year head coach Chris Bergmann didn't go as planned, despite the fact the Hatters controlled play for much of the game. The Hatters doubled-up Grand Canyon in shots (20-10) and drew 18 fouls. But in the end, Stetson couldn't find the back of the net.

"Hats off to Grand Canyon for finishing up on their opportunity," Bergmann said. "I thought we really opened up some great looks and had some breakaways but at the end of the day it's about finishing, and they finished and we didn't. I'm glad we had 20 shots. That was fantastic. We created some dangerous opportunities and had good looks in front of the net. I'd like to see more looks on target. Getting that dangerous inside, you've got to put it on frame and demand saves from the goalkeeper."

After an eventful first half in which the Hatters held a 9-6 edge in shots, Grand Canyon came out more aggressive as the second half began and eventually finished. Tyler Ferguson's free kick from 30 yards out found Anderson at the front of the goal and her header barely eluded Stetson keeper Emily Plotz as the Lopes grabbed the lead.

Down but not out, Stetson didn't quit. The Hatters managed six shots in game's final 21 minutes, with Emily Lamas and Maggie Struble getting shots on-goal.

"That last five minutes was awesome because it was a relentless pursuit of the ball and ultimately a fantastic attack, but the ball just wasn't finding the back of the net and that happens sometimes," Bergmann said.

Plotz finished the game with six saves, while GCU goalkeeper Lauren Garthwaite made seven stops.

The Hatters return to action when they host Rollins, 1 p.m., Sunday.
