Carter Lifts Hatters Past Rollins

Kate Carter scored two goals and assisted on another in leading Stetson to a 3-2 win over Rollins, on a brutally hot Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

The win was not only the first of the year for the Hatters (1-1-0) but also the first Stetson victory for first-year head coach Chris Bergmann.

Stetson had to fight for this one. The Hatters had leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but each time, Rollins came back. But in the end, the Hatters hung on for the win.

"I thought we finished quickly to get up 2-0 and then mentally we relaxed a little bit and let them back in the game," Bergmann said. "Rollins was relentless in a lot of ways. They made good adjustments for the second half but we countered nicely to go up 3-1. We're growing in our mental toughness to keep pushing on the gas and not sit back when you have a lead."

Lindsey Parent opened the scoring for Stetson, taking a short pass from Carter during a scramble in front of the goal to give Stetson a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

Up 1-0, Carter made it a 2-0 game when she corralled a loose ball in front of the goal and found the back of the net just three minutes later.

Rollins came right back to get within 2-1 when Sarah Buckley scored just before halftime.

The Hatters gained what appeared to be some breathing room in the 66th minute when Carter scored her second goal. Britney Bertram and Lily Truong assisted on the goal, but Rollins wasn't done.

The Tars closed to within 3-2 on a Kathryn O'Brien score in the 78th minute, and Stetson spent the remainder of the game thwarting multiple attacks to get the win.

"I like that we were able to play some depth today and count on additional people," Bergmann said. "I think it was a teachable game and I'm happy that we came out as the victors."

Stetson goalkeepers Emily Plotz and Lara Bates combined to make 13 saves, with Bates making several spectacular stops.

The Hatters next face Troy, 5 p.m., Friday, in Mobile, Ala.
