Hatters Blanked by Penn State

Penn State scored early and late as the Nittany Lions handed Stetson a 2-0 loss, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

On a blisteringly hot day, Penn State (2-1-1) was able to do just enough to get the win. While the Hatters (2-2) came up empty on several outstanding chances, the Nittany Lions made the most of theirs.

"We've had a good start but I am disappointed with the results this past weekend," Stetson head coach Cristian Neagu said. "There is no hiding, we have to own up to it, we deserve to be 0-2 in our opening home weekend. We played well but did not defend well and we did not take our chances in front of the goal. However, I am very confident in this group, we just need to get back to basics and build from there."

Penn State took the early lead when Daniel Gonzalez found the net from the left side in the third minute for a 1-0 advantage.

Stetson was never able to match that goal as Penn State keeper Kris Shakes made several strong saves, including a point-blank header attempt from Alex Turner four minutes after the Lions took the lead.

Franck Kouentchi nearly tied the game for Stetson in the 20th minute with another header in close, but his touch went just over the crossbar.

As play moved into the second half with Penn State holding a 1-0 lead the Nittany Lions simply packed it in, routinely playing all 11 men below the midfield line. But Stetson still had chances.

In the span of 90 seconds early in the half, Gio Rodriguez, Gabriel Diniz and Turner each had good looks. Rodriguez missed just high, Diniz had a shot saved and the rebound attempt by Turner rolled just outside the left post.

Penn State maintained its 1-0 lead until the 89th minute when Kyle Perno put the game away with a goal from just in front of Stetson keeper Lute Lillo-Portero.

Shakes made four saves for the game while Lillo-Portero finished with one.

The Hatters return to action when they visit Winthrop, 7 p.m., Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.
