Hatters Soar to a 50-Point Season-Opening Win

Yazz Wazeerud-Din scores 18 in her Hatter debut

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson shot 55 percent from the field and 48 percent from the arc to post a 98-48 victory over Edward Waters in the season opener Thursday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (1-0) drained 12 3-pointers overall including a perfect 3-for-3 effort by Maddie Novak.  It was Stetson's first 50-point win in a season opener since 2017. 

Yazz Wazeerud-Din was impressive in her Stetson debut, scoring a team-high 18 points with five rebounds and five steals. She led the way as five different Hatters scored in double figures.

Jamiya Turner netted her first career double-double with a 13-point, 10-rebound performance.  Day'Neshia Banks scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Tonisha Curry and Novak netted 12 points apiece.

Alyssa Derrick chipped in a career-high eight points, hitting back-to-back 3s in the fourth quarter.  

Along with Wazeerud-Din, Shamari Tyson and Shania Edgecombe made their Hatter debuts.  Tyson registered eight points and four steals, while Edgecombe collected two boards and one block.

Stetson held Edward Waters to just 30 percent shooting, and the Hatters owned a 48-25 edge on the glass.  Lee'Asha Henry scored 12 points to lead the Tigers.

Stetson will visit USF Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Notes:
  • Stetson's last 50-point victory came on Nov. 23 last season against Trinity Baptist, a 116-40 win.
  • The Hatters last 50-point win in a season opener came on Nov. 10, 2017 vs. Thomas.
  • Day'Neshia Banks has scored in double figures in 13 straight games, dating back to last season.
  • The Hatters improved to 11-2 in home openers under head coach Lynn Bria.
