Hatters Down FAU, 78-69, for Season's First Victory

DeLAND--Three different players scored in double figures and Stetson shot 55 percent from the field as the Hatters enjoyed a wire-to-wire victory against visiting Florida Atlantic, 78-69, Tuesday at Edmunds Center.

Rob Perry scored a game-high 19 points, Christiaan Jones added a season-high 17, and Mahamadou Diawara chipped in with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks as the Hatters (1-4) won for the first time this season.

Stetson was strong on both sides of the ball on Tuesday, scoring with efficiency while limiting one of the top shooting teams in the nation to just 44 percent from the field. FAU (4-3) entered game ranked 16th nationally in 3-point percentage (.422) but the Owls were just 3 for 18 against the Hatters.

Although Stetson led the entire game, the Hatters were threatened on several occasions in the second half. But they held firm each time.

After leading 39-30 at halftime, Stetson's advantage was whittled down to 47-44 on a Johnell Davis 3-pointer with 14:55 to play. Following a timeout, the Hatters went on an 8-0 run to push the lead back into double-digits at 55-44 on a Perry jumper with 12:46 left.

FAU again closed the gap, getting to within 65-60 with 4:48 to go, but again the Hatters responded. A 3-pointer by Wheza Panzo, and a dunk by Diawara off a nifty feed from Panzo, pushed Stetson's lead to 70-60 with 3:39 to go. The Owls never seriously threatened again.

Perry was 6 of 14 from the field, adding 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Jones went 6 of 10 with three 3-pointers, and Diawara was 6 of 7 from the floor before fouling out with 1:19 to play.

Karlis Salinis led FAU with 16 points.

  • Freshman Stephan Swenson went scoreless, but he delivered 6 assists in 19 minutes of action
  • Stetson's 12 3-pointers are a season-high and the most for the Hatters since also sinking 12 in a 77-63 loss at Longwood on Dec. 21, 2018
