Hatters Fall to No. 24 FGCU 67-54

Tonysha Curry scores career-high 15 points

Fort Myers, Fla. -- Stetson gave FGCU all it could handle for the better part of 30 minutes, but a fourth quarter surge helped lift the 24th-ranked Eagles to a 67-54 victory over the Hatters Monday night in an ASUN Conference match-up at Alico Arena.

FGCU (24-2, 11-0 ASUN) remained undefeated in league play while Stetson (10-13, 4-6 ASUN) saw its three-game win streak halted.

"I thought we played hard, and I thought we executed a game plan very well," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "It wasn't an effort problem.  I think it came down to rebounding and turnovers."

Stetson raced out to a 15-9 lead after 1 as the Eagles made just 1 of their first 19 shots from the floor. Stetson got 12 of their points from the paint and mixed in a 3-pointer from Tippy Robertson.

The Eagles went on a 14-0 run in the second quarter to take their first lead of the game.  Anja Marinkovic came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers to give FGCU a 30-25 halftime lead.

The Hatters battled back in the third quarter to take the lead on two separate occassions.  Kimia Carter's 3-pointer capped a 10-0 Stetson run and gave the Hatters a 35-33 lead.  Later in the quarter, Jamiya Turner scored from in close to put Stetson in front 40-39.

FGCU regained a five-point lead by the end of the period, however, and extended the lead to double digits early in the fourth.  Stetson still trailed by 10 with 3:54 to go but would pull no closer.

"I thought in the fourth quarter we got a little bit gassed," Bria said.  "We were working really hard because they were getting more offensive possessions, but overall, I was proud of our effort."

Tonysha Curry led the Hatters with a career-high 15 points.  Day'Neshia Banks and Carter each chipped in 11.

The Hatters outshot the Eagles 49 percent to 32 percent and held a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint.  However, FGCU scored 19 points off turnovers while Stetson scored just two.

After completing a three-game road swing with a 2-1 mark, the Hatters will return home to face Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. Saturday.
