Hatters Sweep Split Doubleheader

Stetson women's tennis pulled off an impressive sweep on Tuesday, downing Bethune-Cookman (7-0) at home in the morning and blanking Rollins (7-0) on the road during the afternoon.

"Today was a good test of our fitness," Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant said. "A doubleheader is always tough."

In the morning match, the Hatters eased past a short-handed Bethune-Cookman squad, winning 7-0. The Wildcats dressed just four players, so Stetson had a 2-0 lead before play ever began.

The Hatters quickly took a 3-0 lead when the doubles teams of Brooke Milner & Laia Pasini (6-1) and Danel Ashirova & Lucie Renault (7-5) picked up victories to help the Hatters earn the doubles point.

In singles, Milner gave Stetson the team win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory on Court 2. Lucie Renault made it 5-0 with a 7-5, 6-0 victory on Court 3.

Senior Jordan King recorded her first career dual match victory with a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (6) win on Court 4. Ashirova closed out the morning with a 7-6, 6-2 win on Court 1.

"The team was so happy for Jordan today," Sandlant said. "Her first collegiate dual match for us and she came away with a win. Hard work pays off."

Play moved about 45 minutes south as the Hatters made their way to Winter Park for their match with the Tars, and it was more of the same for Stetson. The Hatters swept all three doubles matches, then won all six singles contests without dropping a set.

Ashirova & Renault were 6-2 winners, while Milner & Pasini captured a 6-0 verdict. Vicky Geurinckx & Noa Cohen got on the board with a 6-3 win to give Stetson a 1-0 lead.

In singles, Ashirova was a 7-5, 6-2 winner on Court 1 while Milner capped a near-perfect singles day by winning 6-2, 6-0 on Court 2.

Renault followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win on Court 3, and Cohen earned a victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision on Court 4.

Geurinckx (6-0, 6-1) and Pasini kept the line moving with wins on Courts 5 and 6, respectively.

The Hatters next visit Florida State, 4 p.m., Friday.
