Hatters Head South to Face FGCU This Weekend

Stetson men's basketball will make an unexpected road trip this weekend as the Hatters visit ASUN Conference rival FGCU, 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, in Fort Myers, Fla. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The Hatters (4-8 overall, 2-4 ASUN) were originally scheduled to host Lipscomb for a pair of games this weekend, but the ASUN made a non COVID-19-related schedule change late Tuesday and directed the Hatters to FGCU (6-5, 1-3). The Hatters and Eagles were scheduled to face other next weekend, and now both teams have an opening which has yet to be filled.

Regardless of opponent, Stetson is looking to get back on track after a frustrating weekend at Bellarmine. The Hatters held halftime leads in each game, including a 16-point advantage on Saturday, but came up short each time.

One bright spot from last weekend was the play of freshman Josh Smith, who registered season highs with 24 points and 9 rebounds in Saturday's loss. Smith, a 6-8 forward, showed off every aspect of his offensive game, going 8 of 10 from the field with 4 three-pointers in 28 minutes.

FGCU split a pair of games last weekend with Lipscomb in Nashville. Through 11 games, junior Caleb Catto leads the Eagles in scoring at 14.7 points per game.

Under the Hat
•Stetson and FGCU have met 30 times prior to this weekend, with the Eagles holding a 21-9 advantage in the series
•Stetson has won 2 of the last 3 meetings between the teams. The Hatters' only loss in that span was a 4-point overtime defeat last January in DeLand.
•Stetson's win in Fort Myers last year was its first since the 2011-12 season
•Stetson and FGCU are meeting this weekend instead of next weekend after the ASUN decided to shuffle the schedule on Tuesday, shelving Stetson's previously scheduled home games with Lipscomb and filling the "open weekend" on FGCU's schedule. The changes are not COVID related.
•As of now, the Hatters do not have an opponent for next weekend, and Stetson's "open weekend" is currently scheduled for Feb. 12-13, potentially giving Stetson back-to-back weekends without no games.
•So far, the Hatters have missed out on a pair of home ASUN weekends. In addition to this weekend's postponed games with Lipscomb, a pair of home games with UNF (Jan. 1-2) were postponed due to COVID within the Ospreys. Those games have yet to be rescheduled.
•When Stetson tips off at FGCU on Friday it will mark the second straight road weekend for the Hatters, making Stetson the only ASUN team this season to play back-to-back conference weekends on the road.
