Hatters fall to FGCU 2-1 in OT to close out the 2021 season

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime at FGCU on Saturday night, to close out the Hatters 2021 regular season. 
 
The Hatters (6-10-2, 3-5-1) got out to a slow start as FGCU put pressure on the Stetson defense as the Eagles (10-7-0, 7-2-0) had two shots within the first nine minutes of action. The Hatters Jackie Fiacco had a shot on frame in the 11' but it was saved by the FGCU keeper. In the 19', the Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Louise Lillback. Fiacco recorded one more shot before the end of the half but to no avail as the Eagles took the 1-0 edge to intermission. 
 
Stetson's offense became more aggressive in the second half as the Hatters recorded shots in the 48' and the 58' but could not find the back of the Eagles net. In the 72', after a save on a Georgia Place shot, Abigail Batchelor retained the deflected shot, gave a short pass to Fiacco who finished it to knot the match at one apiece. The Eagles Alyssa Abbondandolo had the last shot of the half, but missed wide right, sending the match to overtime. 
 
Just 42 seconds into the overtime period, FGCU's Lillback netted her second goal of the match to give the Eagles the 2-1 victory. 
 
The 2021 Stetson women's soccer team had its best season in four years as the Hatters six wins and three ASUN Conference wins are the most since the program won nine matches with four ASUN victories in 2017. 
 
Stetson finished its season with a 6-10-2 overall record and was 3-5-1 in ASUN Conference action.
