Preview: The Hatters travel back to the northeast this weekend in search of a pair of firsts. Stetson will be trying to win at Marist for the first time in program history and, at the same time, will be looking for its first Pioneer Football win in 2021. The Red Foxes come into the game after earning an overtime victory over Valparaiso last weekend. Marist, which did not compete in the spring PFL season, had its first game scheduled this fall before suffering consecutive losses to Columbia and Bryant. Marist is led offensively by redshirt junior running back Hunter Cobb, who is averaging 6.6 yards per carry so far. Like Stetson, Marist has used three different quarterbacks this year. Redshirt senior Austin Day, a native of Clearwater, Fla., started the game against Valpo list week, completing 10-of-19 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Marist is led by a pair of redshirt junior linebackers – Mike Arrington and Jayden Johnson. Both have 31 tackles through three games.
Â
Key Stat:Â Marist has allowed more than 200 yards per game on the ground so far this year while averaging just 107 rushing yards per game offensively. The Red Foxes are also allowing 193 yards per game through the air, but have recorded three interceptions.
Â
Hatters Notebook: Stetson saw its third different starting quarterback of the year in the game against Davidson last week. Graduate transfer
Justin Agner made his first collegiate start since the 2016 season. He made his only previous start for Kent State that year at Ohio State.
Â
Agner had a tremendous day for the Hatters, completing 25-of-37 pass attempts for 287 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He also had a total of 20 rush attempts, gaining 103 yards, but he had 56 yards in losses on six sacks. The Stetson offensive line has now allowed 13 sacks in the last two games. The Hatters allowed just two sacks total in the first two games this year.
Â
The Hatters had their third game of the year without a turnover. Davidson also played a turnover free game. It was the fifth time in modern program history that Stetson has played in a game when neither team committed a turnover. The Hatters are 0-5 in those games.
Â
After missing much of preseason, and the first two games, with injury,
Nazeviah Burris exploded onto the scene in his first start, collecting seven receptions on 10 targets and setting a modern program record with four TD receptions. Burris became the ninth player in modern program history to have 100+ receiving yards in a game, and the second this year. It was the 21st time overall in the modern era that a Stetson receiver has had 100 or more yards in a game. Burris also broke the program mark of three TD receptions in a game that was co-held by Kegan Moore and Donald Parham, who both had three TD receptions in a game twice. Burris (who is called NaNa by his teammates) had TD receptions of 10, 29, 41 and 5 yards.
Â
Stetson remained perfect on the year inside the Red Zone. The Hatters were 3-for-3 against Davidson, running their season total to 16-of-16.
Series History:Â Stetson and Marist have played every fall season since the Hatters joined the PFL in 2013 with Marist holding a 5-2 advantage in the series. The Red Foxes have won each of the four games played in Poughkeepsie.
Â
Stetson came close to ending the drought the last time the Hatters traveled to the Hudson River valley in 2019, dropping a heart-breaking 26-23 decision to the Red Foxes. All three Marist touchdowns in that game came from long distance - a 45-yard run and scoring passes of 54 and 75 yards. That final TD pass came with 8:52 left in the game. Stetson had three possessions after Marist took the lead with one ending in a punt and the other two on downs. All three ended near mid-field.
Â
Stetson's victories in the series came at home, 22-14 in 2014 and 19-14 in 2018. Four of the seven games in the series have been decided by one touchdown or less.
Last Time Out:Â The combination of
Justin Agner and
Nazeviah Burris helped the Hatters build a 21-7 lead over Davidson in the first half of the Hatters' PFL opener at Spec Martin Stadium. The persistent Davidson offense, however, kept the Wildcats in the game with a score late in the second quarter, and then opened the third quarter with a scoring drive to tie the game. Stetson was unable to answer, allowing the Wildcats to take the lead late in the third. Stetson responded mid-way through the fourth quarter when Agner connected with Burris for their fourth touchdown pass of the day, but Davidson answered with 3:31 left in the game and thwarted Stetson's final possessions to take a 35-28 victory.
Â
Quoting Coach Brian Young: "Marist is always a tough opponent. We have talked all week about Hatters not beating Hatters. We had some penalties last week that hurt us and we have to be focused on eliminating those mistakes if we are going to have a chance against a very good, and well-coached, Marist team."
