Hatters compete in first day of Bedford Cup Tournament

Tallahassee, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's tennis team kicked off its fall season Friday afternoon as the Hatters competed in the Bedford Cup at Florida State.

Diogo Marques led off the day for the Hatters in Flight A of singles play as the senior topped his opponent from UNF in two sets (6-2, 7-6) to advance to the second round. Marques ultimately fell to Magnus Johnson from FGCU in two sets (6-3, 6-1).

In Flight B of singles action, Tim Gennes received a bye in the first round setting up a two set victory (6-0, 6-3) over Max Damm from FGCU in the second round. Alexandre Hillhouse topped his opponent from FGCU in the first round in three sets, going down in the first set 6-4 then winning two straight to advance. Hillhouse then advanced to the third round after winning in two sets against Sandeep Mohandoss from USF. Gennes and Hillhouse will go head-to-head in round three on Saturday.

In Flight B of doubles, Josh Laka and Dennis Moses recived a bye in the first round but fell 6-4 to their opponents from USF in the second round. Gennes and Fabian Penzkofer advanced to the second round after the pair downed their opponents from FAU.

"I'm glad we finally got our first fall tournament underway as we've been practicing for about six weeks. I'm sure the players were eager to compete against some other competition other than themselves," said head coach Christophe Noblet. "I hope that every player can learn from his individual match and individual results and apply the lessons tomorrow."

Stetson's men's tennis team continues with competition at the Bedford Cup on Saturday as the Hatters compete in day two of the tournament.
