Three Hatters tally double-digits but Stetson's comeback falls short

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell just short of completing a second half comeback against Campbell University Saturday afternoonn as the Hatters were edged by the Camels 60-58 at home.

First half woes continued to plague the Hatters (2-3) as Stetson played from behind for the entire opening half. After going down 8-0, Chase Johnston put the Hatters on the board with a trey at the 16:51 remaining, but by the 11:14 mark, the Hatters faced a 15-point deficit as Campbell led 20-5. By the end of the half, the Camels (5-1) led the Hatters by 18, 38-20.

After the break, Stetson came out firing as the Hatters made five consecutive 3-point field goals and went on a 15-0 run to cut the deficit to just three with 13:59 left in regulation. The Camels took back a seven point lead within the next minute but after a Campbell turnover and a Christiaan Jones layup, it was a one-point contest with 9:11 to play. The Hatters continued to keep it a single-digit deficit for the rest of the half as Stetson and Campbell played a back-and-forth game for the remaining nine minutes.

With 20 seconds left, Perry connected on his fifth 3-pointer of the contest to make it a two-point game. Then, with 17 seconds remaining, the Camels Cedric Henderson turned the ball over on a bad inbounds pass, but after taking a timeout, Stetson was unable to get off a final shot and fell 60-58 despite the comeback effort.

Perry led all scorers on the night as the junior tallied 19 points for his second-straight 19-point performance. Seventeen of his 19 points came in the second half as well as all five of his 3-point field goals. Johnston and Jones both joined Perry in double-digit scoring as Johnston finished with 15 and Jones totaled 13. Josh Smith grabbed 10 boards and Stephan Swenson dished out seven assists.

The Stetson University men's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 1 as the Hatters travel to Florida Atlantic University for a non-conference, intrastate matchup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
