Hatters fall to Lipscomb in ASUN Semifinal

Nashville, Tenn. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team fell 4-0 to Lipscomb University Sunday afternoon in the 2021 ASUN Championship Semifinal match ending the Hatters season.

The Hatters (8-7-2) came out strong in the first half as Stetson was the aggressor from the opening whistle. Both the Hatters and the Bison shots within the first 13 minutes of action and in the 33', Nelson Pereira and Alvaro Gabancho each found opportunities, but Pereira's was saved by the LU keeper and Gabancho's missed high over the crossbar. The Hatters found two more opportunities before the end of the half but nothing to show. The Stetson defense held the Bison offense to just two shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the two teams played to a scoreless first half.

The second stanza saw both clubs be aggressive early as Lipscomb had two consecutive shots in the 48' and then Pereira and DiLorenzo went back-to-back in the 49' and 50'. Then in the 54', the Bison's Tyrese Spicer broke the scoreless tie and netted the match's first goal. Less than two minutes after Spicer's, Javanne Smith netted a goal of his own to put the Bisons up 2-0. Later in the half, Lipscomb garnered some insurance with goals in the 66' and then the final tally in the 73' to bring the Hatters' season to a close.

The loss concluded Stetson's 2021 run which saw the Hatters go 8-7-2 on the year, giving the program its first winning season since 2014. After being knocked out in the quarterfinals just seven months ago, the Hatters advanced to the ASUN Championship Semifinal for the first time since 2019 and the third time in the last four seasons.

The Hatters boasted four ASUN All-Conference players, four All-Freshman team members, including Freshman of the Year Nelson Pereira, and one All-Academic teamer in Oliver Bryneus. At the time, Stetson is tied for 42nd in the nation in goals with 31 and 38th in goals per match at 1.94.
