Hatters Race Past VCU 64-58

Mali Morgan-Elliott Leads with 12 Points

DeLand, Fla. -- A 22-13 third quarter surge proved to be the difference as Stetson defeated VCU 64-58 Friday afternoon on the first day of the 34th Annual Hatter Classic.

Mali Morgan-Elliott led three players in double figures with 12 points as the Hatters (7-5) improved to 3-0 at the Edmunds Center this season.

"I thought overall we played our most complete game," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I thought for four quarters we played.  That's been a goal, to put four quarters together. We finally did. I thought the second and third quarter we played about as well as we have all year, on both ends."

Eight different Hatters cracked the scoresheet and nine different players pulled down rebounds. Overall, Stetson shot 42 percent from the floor and outrebounded VCU 34-32.

"We had a great team effort, we really did, on both ends," Bria said.  "It was a little bit from everybody, and I think that's hard to guard.  That means everyone is getting more comfortable with sharing the ball and knowing each other a little bit more.  The more we play together, the better we are going to get."

The Rams (5-5) came into the game ranked 51st in the country in the NCAA Net Rankings.  Sarah Te-Biasu led all scorers with 19 points.

VCU led 29-27 at the break, but the Hatters opened the third quarter on a 17-4 run to take the lead for good.  Tippy Robertson and Morgan-Elliott each hit from beyond the arc and Alyssa Hargrove turned a steal into a breakaway lay-up.

The Rams kept it close, cutting the deficit to five four different times in the fourth quarter.  However, Yazz Wazeerud-Din swished one from downtown and Kiya Turner and Jamiya Turner each hit clutch baskets to keep the Hatters in front. Stetson then hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"They were attacking, and you just have to get some points on the board to keep the pressure on them," Bria said.  "I felt like those baskets, in addition to the free throws at the end, were really big for us. It protected our lead."

Tatiana Streun scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Kiya Turner also scored 11.  Morgan-Elliott was 5-for-9 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers and four assists.

The Hatter Classic continues Saturday when VCU and Tennessee State face-off at 1 p.m. The Hatters will then host Tennessee State at 11 a.m. Sunday.
