Hatters set to host Piedmont in the first of another three-game homestand

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team returns home to the Edmunds Center on Wednesday, Dec. 22 as the Hatters host NCAA Division III Piedmont University in a mid-week matinee. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Recap
Stetson comes off a four-game stretch in which the Hatters went 2-2, playing three in a row at home before most recently playing at University of Miami. The Hatters fell to the Hurricanes 82-72 Monday night as three Hatters recorded double figures in the loss. Chase Johnston racked up 18 points on 6-of-11 from 3-point range while Rob Perry tallied 16 points and Christiaan Jones put up 12.

Scouting the Lions
Piedmont University enters Wednesday's contest with a 5-5 overall record as the Lions have dropped three in a row after falling to North Carolina Wesleyan College, Penn State Altoona and most recently, dropping a 66-55 decision to SUNY Brockport Tuesday afternoon.

Piedmont sports a balanced offensive attack as three Lions average double figures. Graduate forward Jordan Foote averages 18.9 points a game while Justin Quick and Orry Clements-Owens average 15.1 and 11.7 points respectively. As a team, the Lions shoot 47.8 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from 3-point range. Piedmont's defense has held its opponents to a 28.2 percent 3-point average over the Lions 10 games played.

All-Time Series
Stetson and Piedmont have met only once before in the history of the two schools as the Hatters and the Lions played in the NAIA District 25 Playoffs on March 3, 1957. The Hatters got the best of the Lions 72-57 in their lone contest.

Hatters Keys and Notes
Stetson enters play on Wednesday with a 4-7 overall record after coming off its 82-72 loss at Miami on Monday night. Wednesday afternoon's contest will be the Hatters second to last non-conference game of the season and third against a non-NCAA Division I opponent. Stetson has had success against non-Division I opponents this season as the Hatters are 2-0 after defeating Florida Memorial to open the season and then topping Johnson University back on Dec. 13.

Like Piedmont, three Hatters average double figures as Perry leads Stetson with 13.9 points a game while Johnston is less than one point behind, averaging an even 13.0 points. Jones follows Johnston and Perry with 11.6 points per game. As a team, the Hatters shoot 43.5 percent from the field and 32.7 percent from long range.

Johnston is currently third in the ASUN in made 3-point field goals as the sophomore has connected on 35-of-84 from beyond the arc.

Looking Ahead
After hosting Piedmont, the Stetson men's basketball team hosts Point University on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 3 p.m. for its last non-conference game of the year. After its bout with Point, the Hatters remain at home to begin the new year and to open ASUN action, as Stetson will host Liberty in an ASUN Conference matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
